Celebrating Academic Excellence of GPI Student Ms. Shivani Mansharamani on winning the Elaine Maimon Award. The Maimon Award recognizes the superior achievement in writing. This prize expresses Arcadia University's belief that writing proficiency is one mark of a liberal education.


In honor of Dr. Elaine Maimon, who served Arcadia University as Professor of English and Theater Arts, Director of Freshman English, and founder of the nationally renowned Writing Across the Curriculum Program, the English Department and the First-Year Writing Program award annually the Maimon Prize for Excellence in Writing produced in the first-year of college.

Purpose of the Award: The Maimon Award recognizes the superior achievement in writing of a first-year student. Beginning in the first-year with Thought and Expression and with other introductory courses, Arcadia University establishes the standard of learning through writing. This prize expresses the University's belief that writing proficiency is one mark of a liberal education.

Description of the Award: The winner of the Maimon Award receives (1) recognition from Arcadia University at the Honors Convocation; (2) a gift from the Writing Program and the Department of English, and (3) a cash prize. In addition, this writer's work will be exhibited as an example of outstanding first-year writing. Essays by the award winner and other finalists will be eligible for inclusion in the Landman Library Digital Repository (ScholarWorks at Arcadia).

In 2013, a strategic academic alliance was formed between The Global Pathways Institute and Arcadia University, a US university accredited by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education (MSCHE). Global Pathways Institute (GPI) gives students the opportunity to follow an academic preparation program, the "Global Pathway Program," through the GPI institute in Mumbai by offering the undergraduate general education curriculum of Arcadia University. GPI offers quality general education courses for which you will earn course credits and a transcript from Arcadia University. GPI provides a rigorous and intensely personal undergraduate education inspired by knowledge, depth, integrity, and collaboration. The program course work is designed to prepare undergraduate students to apply for admission in a bachelor's degree course at a United States institution.

Jairaj Thacker

Shri Jairaj C. Thacker

Mr. Thacker is a Managing Trustee for the Narsee Monjee Educational Trust, a Managing Director for Golden Chemicals Private Limited, and the President of Dr. Balabhai Nanavati Hospital.

The Narsee Monjee Educational Trust (NMET) was formed in the year 1970, with a specific focus on the field of education. NMET founded and operates Jamnabai Narsee School, which has become a Mumbai landmark both geographically and in terms of education. Jamnabai Narsee School offers both Indian and international curricula with more than 4,800 students studying in the school.

Dr. Nicolette DeVille Christensen

Dr. Nicolette DeVille Christensen

Dr. Nicolette DeVille Christensen is the twenty-first President in Arcadia University's 160-year history. Prior to being appointed President, Dr. DeVille Christensen was vice president and executive director for The College of Global Studies at Arcadia University. Dr. DeVille Christensen's unique insight into the challenges of advocating for global education at the campus, national, and international levels has led her to placement on task forces, committees, and professional boards, including the Association of International Education Administrators (AIEA); United Nations Task Force on Education; and United Nations Commission on Disarmament Education, Conflict Resolution, and Peace (founded by the International Association of University Presidents in conjunction with the United Nations).

Before Arcadia, Dr. DeVille Christensen was executive director of Global Academic Management at New York University and also spent 13 years teaching business management at Guilford College in Greensboro, N.C., where she served as department chair and director of Study Abroad.

Dr. John R. Hoffman

Dr. John R. Hoffman

Dr. John Hoffman is the founding dean of the College of Arts and Sciences at Arcadia University. In his 19 years with the institution, he was the founding dean of the Arcadia University College of Business, Health and Sciences from 2009 to 2011, the dean of Graduate Studies from 2008 to 2011, and associate provost for Accreditation, Assessment, and Research from 2012 to 2013.

Dr. Hoffman joined Arcadia University's Department of Biology as a faculty member in 1995. In 2001, he was honored with the Lindback Foundation Award for Distinguished Teaching. Dr. Hoffman has mentored 63 Arcadia undergraduate students in the completion of empirical research-based senior thesis projects. Dr. Hoffman continues to promote university-wide opportunities for faculty and faculty-student research, scholarly work, and creative activities.

Kanika Choudhary

Ms. Kanika Choudhary

A Special Envoy for the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, Ambassador Kanika Choudhary is a native of India and has lived in the Philadelphia region for 15 years. She is a graduate of the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania. She has become a tireless advocate for and champion of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania's global efforts and is actively working to build stronger ties between Pennsylvania and India.

During her official appointment, she is representing the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania with the objective of exploring opportunities that promote mutual and strategic exchanges between the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania and India. Ambassador Choudhary's portfolios include Education, Tourism, Aviation, and Commerce.

Ambassador Choudhary looks forward to a successful dialogue during her official visits to India.

Basanti Roy

Ms. Basanti Roy

Ms. Basanti Roy retired as Secretary, Maharashtra State Board of Secondary and Higher Secondary Education, Mumbai Division, and has more than 33 years of experience in the field of school education as a government officer. Ms. Roy is presently working in Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan, Mumbai, which is the largest NGO of India, as a director.

She heads the program of Free Computer Education for underprivileged youth. Under this programme, 54 centres across the country are presently imparting employable computer skills. 

During her tenure, Ms. Roy headed many institutions as a manager and leader. Ms. Roy has a number of awards and honors to her credit, including the NCERT award for her Manthan innovation.

Manoj Gursahani

Mr. Manoj Gursahani

Mr. Manoj Gursahani is Vice Chairman of the US India Investors Forum, President of the Visit USA Committee, and Co-Chairman of the India Business Group. He is a member of the Core Team of the Bombay Technology Club and the Managing Council of the Vision Foundation of India.

Mr. Gursahani is also a Trustee for the Indian Relief Foundation and the Past President and Founder of the Rotary Club of Mumbai Queens Necklace. Mr. Gursahani is a leading authority on Indo-US trade, tourism, and investment, and he co-ordinates closely with the US Consulate and US Commercial Services.
